  • Post in thread: Deciding to DIY my solar battery was one of my worst mistakes ever

I will be the person who says you do not need compression for LFP, For DIY Solar applications. Using a good enough insulator (thin 1-2 mm EPE Foam/acrylic/fibreglass sheet) should be enough. I would instead focus my efforts on ensuring that your terminals and busbars are clean, if not lightly...
  • Post in thread: Almost everyone is charging their LFP wrong!

Some background: I built my own LFP battery consisting of 16 CALB L160F100 with the JK-BD6A24S10P paired to a LuxPowerTek SNA 5k unit. It is 50 days old showing 21 cycle counts on the BMS as of 26 Oct 2023. It took the battery (51.2V, 100 Ah, 0.6 A active balance current) a full month to...
  • Post in thread: DIY battery longevity

Assuming your seller is actually selling genuine EVE cells, they're not lying. That 6K figure is conservative with a 0.5C charge/discharge rate @ 140 Amps. Real world use are very unlikely to approach it. There has never been a better time to DIY a LFP battery if you need one. I have my own...
  • Post in thread: How about DALY BMS

When I was building my own 100 Ah 16S CALB battery, my supplier explicitly told me to avoid DALY in order to retain warranty. It was only later down the line I realized how much BETTER the JK BMS is compared to DALY. It is leagues ahead not because of its Smart Bluetooth Monitoring but because...
  • Post in thread: Possible to top balance and stored alot of LiFePo4 cells? Hundreds of cells?

So, basically one 'large' LFP Cell of 2020 Ah Capacity. 40 Amps/2020 Ah give a C-rate of ~ 0.02 C. Because, this is already lower than 0.05 C end-current rating , cut-off needs to be done based on rising voltage. The corresponding LFP cut-off voltage for 0.02 C is around 3.475V. As soon as...
  • Post in thread: GUIDE to properly Top-Balance and Charge a LFP Battery: Part 1

Do you know that LFPs need to be balanced every few months and not at every charge cycle? OR Are you aware that setting float voltage of your LFP battery above 3.37V/Cell is overcharging it and harming its potential lifespan and causing cell imbalance? Chances are extremely high that you don't...
  • Post in thread: GUIDE to properly Top-Balance and Charge a LFP Battery: Part 1

*Facepalm* I actually went and checked the 'actual' guide. Wayy too much overcomplicating stuff involved for what should really be plug and play calculations and is the exact opposite of what can be scientifically termed 'information complete'. Please, pull it down immediately. It's doing...
  • Post in thread: my third up in smoke story, technically its my second timeline wise.. but who is counting?

Might be worth giving your friendly local repair shop a try. I have been pleasantly surprised before. Hoping that the same awaits for you.
  • Post in thread: Figuring My Panel Wiring ?

Your Solar Panel (370Wp) stats are: Voc = 41 V, Vmp = 33.92 V You've got 32 of these. Your Inverter Solar MPPT stats of concern are: "No. of MPP Trackers" as 4 "No. of PV Strings per MPP Trackers" as 2 Operating Voltage range = 50 - 550 V, Nominal = 360 V Max DC system voltage = 600 V...
  • Post in thread: why is battery voltage rising too quickly?

As others have said already, it is not uncommon for JK BMSes to report wildly inaccurate SOC readings especially for a regularly cycled pack. It keep drifting overtime. My JK BMS with 100 A, 0.6A balancer even has reported 65% at full charge in the past. The JK does have a workaround feature...
  • Post in thread: Help with the balancing part in jbd

A very common mistake I have seen newcomers make is that they directly target 3.65 V bulk/charge voltage. Don't do that. One should always wait for the battery to come into balance first. And even after that it is not a good idea. At most you should be targeting 3.55 V/Cell instead. Most don't...
  • Post in thread: Charging voltage for LFP?

Any lead acid charger will be able to completely charge and then overcharge LFP. The question is more of how you can prevent the latter from happening. The fully charged resting voltage of LFP is 3.37V/Cell. Any voltage above this without tail current monitoring will slowly overcharge the...
  • Post in thread: JK-BMS-CAN with new Cut-Off Charging Logic (open-source)

All the hard work you have put into making this release possible is nothing short of amazing! Best wishes, and enjoy quality time ahead on your trip. Now is the time to celebrate! 🥳🥳
  • Post in thread: GUIDE to properly Top-Balance and Charge a LFP Battery: Part 1

I have a first hand experience in this well before even authoring this guide. What I have realised during the last four months or so is that Float value of LFP is even lower than my already very conservative values in this thread. I now use 53.4 V and still cycle what I like to assume 98% of my...
  • Post in thread: JK-BMS-CAN with new Cut-Off Charging Logic (open-source)

I removed the corresponding wire from connector entirely using a push pin.
  • Post in thread: GUIDE to properly Top-Balance and Charge a LFP Battery: Part 1

If the underlying foundation of your very understanding is at fault, there is only so much difference those 'thousands of hours' and experience can make. I can smell from miles away who is confrontational possessing a good understanding and who isn't. This you...
  • Post in thread: JK BMS UART Protocol -reply frame to "Read all the data" command

How come you haven't come across this? https://github.com/syssi/esphome-jk-bms I'm already using an ESP32 serving a web page for my JK-BMS as I speak.
  • Post in thread: GUIDE to properly Top-Balance and Charge a LFP Battery: Part 1

You can utilize the tail-current feature of your Victron hardware. Set a voltage like 3.475 V/Cell for bulk and 3.37 V/cell for float and corresponding tail current. It is better than any absorption timer.
  • Post in thread: Are these batteries damaged?

So, you charged the cells, left it to rest for two days and found their OCV to be 3.38V. Congrats, You just accidentally discovered the fully charged OCV of a LFP Cell at rest. Which is ~3.37V. This is beyond just normal. This is expected. All LFP Cells show roughly the same behaviour.
  • Post in thread: What's the best solar-related item you bought in 2023?

An ESP32 dev board (I bought two). Never thought such a tiny device costing so little could be of so much use reliving so much headache!! And obligatory, 2023 was the year my entire hybrid Solar system was commissioned. Next in line: buying a RS485 or CAN board and figuring out inverter comms
  • Post in thread: Charging voltage for LFP?

Simple! It is because they are unaware of true LFP charging behaviour. Here's the reality: When it comes to monitoring tail current and cutting off charging current, Most equipment built for lead acid batteries simply CAN'T. You are bound to get confused. In most cases, it comes down to...
  • Post in thread: How to Flash Atom S3 with EspHome - HA

Thank you for taking the time to meticulously document everything for others. Looks like we need to explicitly state everyone to keep everything updated beforehand.
  • Post in thread: JK BMS UART Protocol -reply frame to "Read all the data" command

Due to unstability, the repository was recently updated to use separate protocols for newer BMS with HW version >= 11. Try making these changes substitutions: name: jk-bms device_description: "Monitor and control a JK-BMS via bluetooth" external_components_source...
  • Post in thread: JK-BMS-CAN with new Cut-Off Charging Logic (open-source)

Also, if it bears mentioning again and again. When there is current going in/out of the battery, its balance can't be determined due to internal resistance. Very Ideally, determining battery balance involves removing all external potentials across the battery (such as can be achieved by turning...
  • Post in thread: GUIDE to properly Top-Balance and Charge a LFP Battery: Part 1

You have already set your controllers close to the best they're capable of. The next step if you're still not satisfied can be implementing BMS CANBus comms. I don't think this is implemented. At the same time, you shouldn't worry too much about 0.1% edge case where your battery is nearing...
  • Post in thread: Position of mc4 connector on solar panel

As long as the connectors themselves aren't directly end underneath and exposed to the 'gaps' between two solar panels and There are no sharp bends in the way you organize the wires, I don't see anything that can go wrong. There are multiple mounting holes near the centre. Use any free one and...
  • Post in thread: Why does 18kPV import power despite ample solar and battery?

Don't worry about that small of a number. This I think has to do with fluctuations. Every time a dip/fluctuation occurs, some energy flows in from the grid before the Inverter has time to respond and adjust.
  • Post in thread: EG4 6000xp - Battery Voltage Settings

Battery warning voltage will be the voltage at which inverter will just send a battery low notification in the app. On grid cutoff refers to voltage at which you want grid to take over. If there's no grid, inverter will stop EPS output below Discharge cutoff voltage. Just use dongle hotspot...

Or maybe it is because the cells were left to rest for 30 minutes.
