The story has several versions, another is the fence running around the property supplied the farmer with free electricity. One only needs to read the comments below videos like this one below to read all the different versions. The big thing is the easement and most power company easements restrict what you can have near the transmission lines. On our other farm we had a 360Kv transmission line run across the fields. My father always said when combining oats he could feel a tingle now and then when under the lines near the low point between towers, the pickup attachment skids on the combine would touch the ground.

I've collected fossils under high voltage transmission lines, and any large metal tools would shock you when you picked them up. Pry bars, fence posts, the surveyor's tools, and even wire fencing actually vibrated if you held them loosly in your bare hands.

I have seen some of those monsters at TRANSCO pumping stations.

I have literally never seen an engine bigger except maybe one that went in a cargo ship.

If it was running you couldn’t be in there for more than 15 minutes at a time even with hearing protection.
