Lithium batteries on airplanes

Hey!

So I just got a bunch of old batteries off of a local el scooter vendor,
while I´m visiting my family.
I´m flying out of here in a couple of days, and from what I´ve researched - it´s not allowed to bring them on the airplane.
Suppose I´d try anyway - Have any of you guys got any experience with that? I suppose I´ll leave them here actually,
and here is my main question:
These packs are lithium batteries that are really low charge or not taking charge any more (hence why I got them for free),
so I was wondering if there is any danger in storing them at my mum´s house for longer periods of time?

Thank you so much for any reply!

Depends on the type of cells they are.
If they are Li-Ion 18650 (more than likely) there is often one or two cells that go bad and kick the mini-bms to cutoff.
Most folks like Jehu Garcia (Youtube) would tear the packs open and test, recycle the ones that are dead and reuse the good ones in something else. Leaving any Li-ion cell at 0% or very low SOC damages them.

You take them on a plane and get caught, it WILL NOT BE PLEASANT ! They really take a Dim View of risking aircraft.
They coudl be shipped by Air-Freight if properly identified.
They can be shipped via courier, as long as they are identified.
Cross a National Border and things can get trickier with paperwork.

haha yeah right, i think you´ve got a good point there! I´ll leave them here for sure.
I don´t think a courier service will be a good economic trade off with these old lithium cells.
And I will cross borders!
I haven´t opened them yet, but looks like indeed 18650s - I don´t have the means/tools to check them here.
So actually my question remains: Besides damaging the capacity of the cell by storing them undercharged: What about potential fire hazard to my mum´s house?

I’ve flown a number of times with a LiFePO4 battery.

There is a capacity maximum you can fly with but I can’t find the document right now.

Hey JoeHam! Thanks for the reply.
Unfortunately they´re alle Li-ion, and way beyond 100Wh!
They will stay at my mum´s!

But my MAIN QUESTION remains guys if anybody knows!
Will it be dangerous to store these batteries, given that they are all low charge or supposedly defect batteries, for 6 months in my mum´s house??

Thanks !!
