Help me Install 3 EG4 Mini Split Solar Heat Pumps

That's a great setup you have on the pole barn, I subscribed. Hope to see another video soon.

Subscribed to both :)

@SmitHVAC had seen and appreciated your videos, also commented on "Rinnai code 11" as I have a Rinnai RC98 (tankless water heater for others). 12 yrs no problems. Would buy Rinnai again if it died tomorrow...

Oh that was you! I remember your comment. Rinnai makes great products, especially for the people who work on them. I've worked on many brands and I would never buy anything but a Rinnai.

I don’t think I have seen another brand in my 20 years (off and on) in Korea. They power both hydronic heat and instant hot water. Almost every house/apartment has hydronic heat there (with the exception of the few remaining houses that have charcoal “ondol” floor heat).

Well for no reason at all today, my other 24k unit (not the one with the MPPT issue) ... Decide it was going to drop wifi. The indicator light on the front of the unit was off, and the app said the unit was disconnected. I tried turning it off and back on, I tried the connect to network method with the remote and Nothing I did would cause the indicator light to come back on.

Finally went outside to the disconnect and turned off AC and DC power for a minute. Came back in and, after deleting the unit from the app, using the remote network set up procedure got it connect back to the network

But pretty sucky it just dropped for no reason.

Just an FYI, Been working with SS on the MPPT issue of the one 24k unit. They got back with me about 2 weeks ago, and we have been corresponding and I sent some pics. The indication right now is SS does not feel like this is normal behavior and asked for the serial number so they could get me the MPPT.

So the bottom line is this is not an off-grid capable heatpump/airconditioner.
It needs alternating current to do. Which means that you/we/me are only saving the inversion loss by being batteryless.

i.e. buying an a/c only heat pump that is most efficient and running from your main solar array through an inverter and battery is likely a better choice.

Signature solar is maintaining that these will not work with*OUT* (without alternating current) alternating current, which is basically true, but not the premise I bought 3 units under.

I do not understand this statement. Mine work on AC alone.

And as far as off grid DC solar is concerned, I had one unit hooked up DC only and it worked. It just timed out after heavy clouds.

SS said this was not normal and is replacing the MPPT. Well see.

Did anyone else see the Android app, Solar AirCon, got updated earlier this month? I forgot to look at the improvements and now cannot find a list of what has changed. As far as I can tell they made no real improvements, just some cosmetic things and graphics. Anyone else find any real improvements in the new app?

Sorry, I missed a word above, it should have read "will not work without alternating current".

One of the 24kbtu units today would NOT start drawing dc/solar on the airconditioning/cool setting. Despite turning off, disconnecting pv, reconecting and connecting pv again.

However, in frustration cycling through to run the fan only, the dry/raindrop setting did immediately illuminate the solar icon on the head unit, and the compressor started outside. So I have cooling.... but not under the cool setting.

What do you think the dry / raindrop does? Or is supposed to do? I've not messed with the remotes much.

Lol, video from another Deye rebrander in Vegas...very slow / Low Power mode so air lingers over cooling coil resulting in condensation / dehumidification??

Welnat, just for point of reference what's your Solar setup for each unit???

Didn't notice anything besides graphics change on app.

However, accidentally stumbled on if you hover/click over grid and solar usage it will report them independently (see I ran all Solar since April 1 except for the start of June when the sun started going behind panels in evening. Then I discovered the large idle parasitic draw and switched back to all Solar)

Man, I love the forum for this, excellent video that guy is putting out with details. The One 24kbtu that is performing less reliably is 4x445 watt delonghi panels.
The other is 4 x 345 watt canadian solar panels and it works more reliably and regains power etc.

These were both testing purpose solar rigs, and... uh field expedient! I have 6x445w and 9x345w planned for full power - or had planned. With the issues I may put this extra power through the inverter instead of them directly.

The original goal was to have a source of heat and airconditioning parallell to the grid and also in a no-grid location. both locations have solar, inverters and battery storage.

Does the app work directly with a wifi direct access point or must the unit be connected through a gateway?

Yeah you may have a bad mppt like I do in one of my units. Signature solar said this was not normal behavior. For it to time out in full sun.

With the app I am not sure if it works just over Wi-Fi or not. I know it definitely works when I am not here so it works over the internet

I think there might be some new features in the drop-down menus from the home menu of the air conditioner screen. At least I wasn't aware of this before. The graphics are new for sure

Since this has become the de facto thread of Deye solar mini split knowledge, will point out the S/N label is just paper and needs upgrade.

What do you like?? Clear spay paint? Nail polish?? I'm thinking clear vinyl or contact paper of some sort??

(FYI the other number on right is the model number of the Panasonic compressor on the 24k units. 12k are Highly brand (Hitachi part owner)

Edit 11/17/23 while installing new units. Protect your original S/N labels, but decades worth of spares are in the parts package for indoor unit, and in the wiring compartment for outdoor unit. Obviously, retain these wherever you file paperwork :)

Wish List

1. App or Firmware Update so that the AC Limiter Stays on Between Cycles (aka turning the unit off and back on either manually, scheduled or because the mppt timed out due to lack of solar power resets the AC Limiter to OFF)

2. Same for the Head Unit "Light", Fan Speeds, etc. Right now, if the head unit light is off, when the unit powers off and you turn it back on, the "Light Off" setting is not remembered and it comes back on.

3. In some cases, the Unit seems to go to sleep and has to be physically restarted IF running on DC solar input only AND solar availability gets diminished below the input threshold of the MPPT.
- IF the sun goes behind clouds long enough for the MPPT to time out its search for solar power
- In some cases, The Unit simply will not start back up and power back on once the sun come back out (when running on DC solar only: AC breaker off or not connected)
-The unit times out, and ...
- You have to physically turn it back on.

4. The room temp and the set temp seem to diverge a good bit. Example: if the unit is set to 75F, it will run the compressor to about 73F and then not come back on until the room gets to about 77F

5. App Updates
- Cloud Scheduling (which you to set an On / Off time schedule): Would be nice if the scheduling could also include settings for
  • Temp when the unit comes on so the User could set different temps for different times of day
  • Same for the AC Limit Function, Fan Speed, Head Unit Light, etc

What else does anyone else see / Wish for?
which app is it you are using. I can't seem to find a link or the name of the best app to use for my 12k

So SS sells both AC and AC/DC units. Is there any negative o buying the AC/DC and only using the AC part? Then having the option in the future of doing PV specifically for the air con unit?
