Battleborn vs Epoch Batteries (thread migration)

Well did ya order? We have a few 100ah epoch here in our local fishing club they are happy with them. Looks like the coupon is gone :/
Current Connected has it.

I would recommend you look at the SOK 280 battery which has free shipping and is heated 280: https://www.us.sokbattery.com/product-page/12v-280ah-lithium-battery-built-in-heater-and-bluetooth they are $1000.00 with free shipping

There are some advantages:

1) Its is fully serviceable including getting to the cells and pulling them out, epoch and BB are welded you can not service them. BB you can't even open the lid

2) They are not parallel cells, both BB and Epoch use multiple cells that show up as 1 cell. So in there 460 battery its using 8x of the EVE 230 but you view them as 4. I don't like this because if 1 of the cells is bad I would not know which out of the 2 it is.

Only disadvantage to the SOK is its metal and will probably rust and is probably pretty bad at keeping the heating.

Me personally I would do neither and get the V5 sun fun kit: https://www.sunfunkits.com/product/...eluxe-heated-smart-lfp-battery-kit-200amp-bms

Main reasons for it are:

1) The most serviceable out of all including options to change to a different bms, changing cells is easy, basically anything can be swapped out.

2) Has an active balancer, and you can set to run only when the battery is about to be full.

3) The only battery that can keep the battery warm even when its not charging, most of these other batteries the heater only works when you are charging, with the sfk you can press the heater button and it will keep the battery warm regardless. It does the same auto warm the battery if attempting to charge in cold weather like other heated batteries do as well so 2 ways to keep batteries warm.

4) It uses a JBD bms not proprietary so there are plenty of third party support for it including victron with the cerbo, solar assitant, and a lot of other stuff. The bluetooth can be turned off, its important because bluetooth batteries can be potentially hacked.

5) They put it together in the USA and have good support, but with the kit you do most of the assembly so you can know your battery inside and out and fix things.

I generally don't trust warranties with batteries due to bad experience with both Surret Rolls & Battle Born. Surret Rolls eventually did the right thing once my lawyer got involved but battle born did nothing blamed me and gave me the run around; the long story of that is I ended up with a BB100 with a busted up lid as I had to change their bms to a 100AH bms from overkill solar to get that battery to work again.

I would suggest you not rush into this and instead of buying all the batteries buy 1 to try out before buying others.

Yeah and the build quality is better. You get a lot more for less money, it's crazy.

Should work the same as battleborn or any other 12 volt battery. Do you have a regulated DC to DC charger. Or is the alternator externally regulated
I will be getting a WS500W White Wakespeed Unit instead of a dc to dc charger. The second alternatior will either be a nations 280 or a roam rig. I am still figuring that out with agile off road.

Will that wakespeed regulator work with those batteries? Do you know how fast that alternator can charge the 1380 battery bank from Epoch? Thank you!

Yes that combo is fantastic! You will be happy for a long time with those. Also the epoch has communication with victron but you don't necessarily need to use it. Just connect the batteries in parallel and connect your inverter. Easy
Here are the victron parts I was planning on ordering along with three epoch 460 amp batteries, and 710 watts solar on roof, along with a second alternator. I should be able to nerd out and play my video games in my van for however long I want, hahahah!

Does this victron list look about right for my van needs?

They are in my cart. I want to speak with them tomorrow, then Ill order. Here is a code for 10% off and it works right now: MVINTRIGUE

Thank you for the opinions, I do appreciate them. However, I will not be swapping out anything, lol. I don't even own a screwdriver at current. lol! I need something plug and play. Also I was hoping for around 1200 amp hours or more with minimal space and weight being taken up as a van doesn't have much of either. The epoch 460 is Will approved, so I am great!

Ummm I thought I remembered a video of yours Will where you said it is bad bad bad to run your batteries in parallel, and that you should only run them in series? Or does that not apply to 12 volt systems? Or does not apply to these particular batteries? I would really appreciate clarification on this. Thank you kindly!

Nope never

I am looking for the video, maybe it was about solar panels? Also did you see my victron list? All look good? Thank you!
What are you using to fuse the batteries? You could potentially just use the lynx distributor, three fused positions for the multiplus 2 and two smartsolars, then battery to the positive bus bar via cutoff switch, and negative via smartshunt. Would leave you one available fused position on the distributor for future use. Similar to pic.

Wow I have no idea! My van builder is going to build it. I am just getting all the parts. He normally uses battleborn 100 amp as he does small systems. Mine will be his biggest by far but I am hoping its all the same and he knows what he is doing. ;-)

Does it mean anything that Epoch 460 batter only has 230 Max Continuous Charge and battleborn 270 has 300 Max Continuous Charge? Sounds like BB would charge faster with the second alternator that can go to 280 amps? Thank you.

3 Epoch can take in 690a.
4 BB can take in 1200a.
Alternator can only put out 280a.
Nope, doesn't make any difference. ;)

Anytime you start thinking about really throwing a big charge on a battery bank, it’s always a good idea to have a second dedicated Alternator. Alternators that have remote fan cooled rectifiers can fit where large cases can’t. I really like giving the engine/chassis is own system.

Ohhhhhhhh since i am getting multiplies, it ADDS them up? If I was only getting ONE, then it would matter? I think I understand! Woo slowly but surly I am getting there, lol.

Right
With the combined capacity of either choice.
There wouldn't be a difference, until you tried to charge at more than 690a.

One place you can save a few bucks…
Instead of one PowerIn and one Distributor get two PowerIn’s - then look at YouTube for a video on how to add fuses to the PowerIn.

You lose the led electronics board that will tell you if a fuse is blown. Or look at YouTube for a video on how to power that (uses 5v if I remember correctly)

Make sure you use big enough cables for the main line - either 4/0 or a pair of 2/0 (so 2-reds & 2blacks) that goes to the inverter and between the bus bars.

Do a drawing of everything-equipment, wires, fuses, etc. you will understand it better, your installer will follow your plan, and on the road, you will have drawings to understand how it was built in case you have issues/problems.

Post your drawing here and we can help fix any issues.

Vans and travel trailers I would imagine are a big 12v market. Is BB affiliated with Thor, as they see, to be the defacto instal in a lot of systems. Their new battery and multiplex is unique.
looking to see f a 280 will squeeze into an older airstream tongue box as opposed to two G2.
great thread.
