Connecting Battery/Inverter Negative to Inverter Ground?

Hello,

I'm currently running wire between a Midnite E-Panel and SMA SI-6048 (along with battery). From the following instruction, it appears I am to 'bond' (connect) the inverter/battery's negative to the entire system ground. Is this correct and necessary? I did not expect to see this but I am far from an expert. TIA.

NEC 250.162 requires grounding of 60-300VDC to system ground.

It is common practice to do this for 48V systems.

12/24/48VDC systems in RVs are always bonded to the chassis as is the AC ground.

@timselectric will tell you if I'm wrong.

mine is hooked up like that. One is an equipment ground. the other will ground the DC side of the system.

Okay, great--that's pretty conclusive. I thought about it more like in the case of a car--the battery negative is connected to chassis ground.
