If I leave the switch on between the battery and the solar charge controller all the time, will it run down the battery — even though there is no other load? I guess it’s kind of a dumb question, but I have never used my setup yet. …well I guess if the solar is on too it would top off what energy is being used. Maybe I answered my own question, but I don’t know what best practices are… whether or not you leave the system on while you’re not using it, or just turn it all on when you get ready to use it. (Sorry for the dumb question)

If you're building a tiny 5 watt system with a couple of rechargeable AA batteries, yes turn off the charge controller if you're not using it.
If you're doing anything bigger, leave it connected. If the charge controller is disconnected, the controller won't be using any power but your solar panels won't be charging the battery either.

Leave it on, it won't drain the battery. (Unless it's a cheap no name SCC)
