It is not really suitable for use in the US if he wants to plug it in here*. Having to install additional transformers and all adds to cost and complexity.

No matter what he chooses. If he wants to output 50Hz, it can't be plugged in to 60Hz. A transformer doesn't change frequency. He will need a 60Hz charger, so that he can charge from the US grid. And a 50Hz inverter that puts out 230v, to power his existing equipment.
