Got Tractor?

We thought about buying a cow to butcher.. We currently just purchase a 1/2 cow at a time and are forced to pay the butcher fees.. I think butchers might be thieves because it seems our order is always lighter than we expected.

That pig took two of us 12 hours from kill to being wrapped in the freezer. Seemed like wrapping it was as much work as everything else combined.

What's it like butchering a cow? We used the bottom 1/3 of a 55 gallon drum for that big hog, but I'm thinking a cow might fill an entire drum.

Are they as hard to skin as a pig? I do deer (5 minutes) every year, but that pig (>Hour) was a whole different story.
Oh yeah... cow is HUGE, and the leather is thick.
About an hour is I recall... it's been 40 years...

Off grid is a pretty wide open topic…
off the res…

gettin’ one of these for my little organic garden…
I’ll show those gophers wtflip is up. Ima Turn their world upside down…

In 98, my dad GAVE AWAY his entire farming equipment inventory including a Massey 6578 Perkins diesel with an ezloader rototiller and a ton of bailing equipment...
Didn't tell me until he'd sold our family farm... to go on a hunting trip...
60 acres in Lancaster SC, with a gold mine on it, a spring fed pond, pecan orchard, peach orchard, 6000sqft shop, with a full length back covered parking shed, and sooo much more.
130K...
And gave away the equipment in the sale...

Thanks Dad…

Our Nuffield 10/60 was the best, started instantly as long as the diesel was liquid and went like a train. 10 speed with the hi-lo and a pleasing column of gray smoke when pulling hard. Sounded fab too.

If you live rural/remote and you can afford one then most definitely you should own a tractor.

I’d recommend one that has the quick connection front for dirt buckets, blades, fork to load/unload palletized goods, must have 3pt rear attachment option, PTO, and have an extra hydraulic controller port. I use the forks and buckets all the time. The tractor with various attachments save me time and allows me to do more work. Case in point, the dirt road going to our housing area washed out. My three neighbors and I couldn’t get out. I was the only one in the area with a tractor. So after a few hours moving rocks, dirt, and gravel resulted in the dirt road being restored. I know the neighbors were very happy as well as my wife.

Nice to have a cement mixer that runs off the PTO/3pt hitch too. Box scrapper, land plane scrapper, rake, post hole digger, grapple, harrows, rotovator, … are all good attachments to go along with the tractor. Choose the ones you need for the jobs you need to do. As for size, I‘d stay away from the small under 25hp ones. They can be fine for small areas but strain to do heavy work.

I have a New Holland Boomer TCD45 diesel. I was told 50hp is a good middle ground for general use. 100hp is better but bigger. Bigger tractor limits where you can go but it can fork heavier loads and pull a bigger disc. I did consider the skid steers but the poor visibility on the sides and rear was a huge factor why I went with a tractor. I didn’t want to run over anything or anyone because I failed to see them due to the blind spots. Plenty of visibility sitting up on a tractor. Plus when’s the last time you saw a skid steer discing a field. There are so many things that a tractor can do so it really does pay for itself over time.

Did someone say TRACTOR? I'll see your tractor and raise you one. BACKHOE! This is "baby" my backhoe. (Baby Got Back).
Get some wheel spacers if you have slope issues and don't like tipping over.

The answer is in the article. All day doing yard work, towing trailer, pulling logs out of the woods, grading with blade or rake....mowing used a lot more energy. About an hour of use mowing.

That "Lawnmower" is 1200 pounds of raw POWER! Nothing like electric motor for torque....I also had a Cub Cadet 782 gas tractor and it couldn't come close to the power with ground engaging implements like this electric tractor can. That's why all trains, giant dump trucks, earth movers, etc are electric. John Deere actually has an autonomous farm tractor with a 1/4 mile extension cord! Electriuc tractors are here and will dominate the future. They just make way too much sense.......There is nothing a gas or diesel motor can do that an electric motor can't do better....and quieter.

Gotta be able to refuel in the field. I swear I think tractors will always be or should always be diesel. Do tractors contibute to much of the harm to the air compared to everything else?
