Unintended consequences of Solar that we see

I got a pretty keen grand-daughter !
She and I built a few E-bikes together, and when she visits, she always wants to see any changes/ up-dates to the off-grid-solar since last visit.
She is only 11 years old, but pretty interested. I built her a workbench in the shop to suit her height, with all her own tools.
She gave me an Amazon gift card for Christmas with a note "so Papa can get more things for his inventions"

Maybe she will take over operation of the Solar Power Plant once I am gone.
nah, she won't wait that long. Next it will be 'grandpa lets do this.

All 46 of our panels are on the roof. I plan to add another 24 over time. Field arrays here (Australia) are far more expensive and have various extra regulatory requirements. It's way cheaper/easier to use your roof.
And really, this makes better sense if the goal is to be "energy efficient", I mean, I doubt the RSD and Arc-fault rules are intended to make N.Americans run out and build ground mount arrays using extra material, and land in the process, but that is what is happening.

Yeah, I can see it coming.
She knew all those cloudy foggy days during December 'can't be good for solar'
she said she was worried there wouldn't be enough sun "to cook the Christmas Turkey' (LOL the oven is the only thing left NOT on solar, but she didn't know that)

I blame the lobby groups. Making it hard for the average person to do a roof install with all kinds of limitations and ever growing list of requirements.

The lobby group appears to be fire fighters and the electrical code committee...it was ironic to read the Australians commenting that Firefighters insisted on roof level PV isolation switches...which later were found to be the Cause of most roof level solar system fires. (ya just can't make this stuff up).

I have been adjusting the planned location and orientation for the new structure to get the best PV I can, rather than the ideal location for a barn really. I can adjust the road to suit the barn more easily than adjusting the sun :ROFLMAO:

don't forget the large solar installer lobby clubs ( at least here )

Yeah, we are building a new Barn this year...er I mean Solar Panel support I am calling a "barn" ...but don't tell.
I don't understand why anyone would go rooftop solar if there is an opportunity for ground mount.

One of my Marine Corps buddies called this morning. He knows I have a solar system here and we have talked about him installing a system at the acreage he purchased last year that has 8 acres. He always wants roof mount. He understands why I tilt my panels and now wants a roof mount with tilt.

I tried, really tried........

The non viability of anyone else in my family taking over the system is a big one. Professional service costs to understand and maintain it would be insane. So I keep everything running in parallel to a traditional grid system. Flip a few breakers and it's all isolated, with everything back on straight feeders.

A regular home electric system is so fantastically reliable and long lived. You build it right and it's good for 40, 60, could be 80 years.

Renewable energy runs like sand through your fingers, there's not really a hope of even the simplest grid tied system going more than 10 years before needing servicing. I don't think people appreciate what a precarious future we are building and they take for granted all the reasons that we built the grid as a collectively maintained cooperative system.

regulations and ordinances here are just terrible for ground mounts, from planning commissions to may additional requirements

The exact opposite here. The law basically says: "if you don't bother your neighbors or significantly alter the landscape, just let the municipality know you're putting it up and you're good. No permit needed." It only becomes paperwork intensive once you go over 100kW.

well, you do know how proud the dutch are on their "well organised" city planning scheme's....
Sometime that is a blessing, until you want something out of the norm :-(
