I will have a 16s 48 volt 280amp battery pack, this means I think I need a 300amp BMS, can I use a 600amp bms or must it be closer to the battery pack size. If it is OK to use any amp over min what other than cost are the cons

The BMS amp rating is for the expected charge and/or load currents passing thru it. It is not related to the capacity (amp hours) of the battery(s).

Thank you, so what do I need to know to calculate the size of my bms and inverter, I would like to have a battery back up with future solar panels.

Perform an energy audit to determine your power needs. This will give more of a daily power use figure. You need to determine how much power you will need to handle at any time: running microwave, hair dryer, ... at the same time. It adds up quickly.

Then for charging side, estimate how many amps you intend to charge the batteries.
