Why did my SIX marine batteries (27DC2) die in less than one year?

Best value for Roll Your Own lithium (cells) right now seem to be the 290 (aka 300/310/320) ah LiFepo4 cells on aliexpress, 8 for just under a grand. Add bms.

Regarding the OP's "hybrid/starting" supposedly deep cycle setup;
1. Buy a $10US battery hydrometer.
2. Buy a few jugs of distilled water from wally world.
3. Check water after a full charge, you will need to EQ/cook em up till all the cells bubble.
4. Check/Rewire your battery bank into parallel strings of similar aged pairs of batteries, drawing off opposite sides of the bank (IE Left top NEG and Right Bottom POS), and ideally
5. Install balancers on each string (pair of 2), IE Victron Battery Balancers BBA000100100, or the black potted asian equivalent available for $20US on ali-ex/ebay/amazon.

Regarding over-charging, the main failure mode of FLA is + grid corrosion, namely LOM causing the electrolyte to boil off, SG to rise thus speeding up positive grid corrosion.

Topping up with distilled water after your EQ charge of the week (31-32v) is a good start. For shits and giggles, take a hydrometer reading before adding water, if electrolyte levels are the same the SG readings should be too. If one cell is a bit lower visually, expect the SG to be a bit higher (more concentrated acid) also. If for example the fluid level is low AND the SG is lower than other cells, you probably have a failed/failing cell.

Best bang for the buck IMHO if you can find one is a decent lightly used flooded lead acid traction (think forklift/pallet jack) battery. Less parallel strings to go out of whack/balance.
