Average Consumption?

10 Kwh (200 amp hours@54 volts) per day running a fridge, a freezer, a split pack and a sewage pump 24/7 during the rainy months and other minor loads. all lights are LED, and water heater is on demand propane. No TV, no Computer, no peripherals. shop is powered when in it. lighting (in shop) only use is about 1200 watts all LED's

edited to clarify shop lighting and water heater being on demand... no heater. heating for house is via woodstove.

What is your watt hours on the fridge instead of amp hours?

I’m running an off grid solar system in Sweden, but I’m not fully off grid - I use grid power in addition and switch loads as needed.

Our average consumption in summer months is around 6.5kWh per day, of which solar is about 4.5kWh and grid is about 2kWh.

In winter we use around 20-24kWh per day (the heating is ground source heat pump). Only around 1-2kWh of that consumption is solar, the rest is grid because the sun is on his holidays in the Southern Hemisphere during winter and we barely see him above the horizon ?️

sorry I thought about this after the fact.

My consumption is quite a bit higher. My battery bank is down by 160-200 amp hours each morning but my arrays are large enough that I get fully charged through the day while still running all of the above. Measured with a shunt system and confirmed by the BMS systems use numbers

so actual usage after the sun drops low enough to start drawing from the batteries is 160-200 amp hours (depending upon if we are all there or if its just me.)

i have never did an item by item usage audit, but neither my current fridge or my as of last week replaced freezer are super duper gee whiz super seer rating energy savers (ha ha ha ). I just used my highest months usage when I was still grid connected and multiplied that by 1.5 as my daily and then extrapolated that out to see what I needed design wise for 4-5 days of bad weather.

Since the power company dropped all of us not willing to pay premiums to keep them in what they consider a non profitable area I have had no issues keeping the power rolling.

Before anybody starts.... they wanted 10K up front to replace a few lines with the knowledge that it would not stop there, so self generate was the order of the day.

Are you on the Pacific side or the Gulf side?

I'm in San Felipe.
Cool! Back in the 70s we used to go down there to ride motorcycles, drink Tecate beer eat shrimp and camp on the beach!
I was from the Imperial Valley and in the 80s ran the electric shop for 2 of those geothermal plants in Heber 4 miles north of Mexicali.
When you cross to work which crossing do you usually use?

That gives you a heat index of around 130º. Fortunately it cooled down somewhat at night on that beach.

It's great here. I sold my business and my house and retired. I only cross for things I can't get here and
I usually cross at the east mexicali border. It's less commercial vehicles.
Houses are still cheap , beer is still cold!!

As I've been planning a potential move off-grid I have become very curious to know more about the average annual consumption for those who are already doing it. Obviously minimizing consumption is key to success, but how has that worked out for everyone? Would really love to hear from some folks who wouldn't mind sharing their numbers. I realize it's all relative, but I'm still interested.
Anywhere from 40kwh to 110kwh a day depending on weather and activity.

One of the journeyman that I apprenticed under died at that crossing back during its construction back in '95. It was late July and temps were topping 120º. He always said he wanted to go with his boots on. He succeeded at that. I had moved from California by late '92 and only returned for occasional temporary work and have never been to the east port. I started crossing the port in town on foot when I was probably 13 years old. I've known several wireman that have retired out of San Diego down in Baja over the years.

I see that recently there has been quite a few car fires scattered around Baja with the cartels acting up against the government?

In Mexicali they lit a bus on fire , but they did let everyone get off the bus first......few other things went down but not too much around here.
I can't imagine 13 yr old walking that crossing alone. That's crazy... you gotta love that era, free range kids. Town has grown but it's still small.Baja desert races bring huge crowds.
We love it.

How are you guys running a house on 3-6 KWh a day?

Me (I use ~3) I don't use electricity for heating or cooking, have no A/C, my biggest draw is the fridge - some 60Wh for 20-30 minutes on the hour , I run "cold" cycles on the washing machine, my computers are laptops with external monitors, all lighting is LED.

My whole house is electric.
If I don’t cook I don’t eat and it’s far to hot here in the summer not to run the AC and I’m getting to old to cut 4 or 5 cords of wood a year.

All of our bulbs and monitors, TVs are Led also..

The only thing I have to do yet is replace the standard water heater with a Rheem Heat pump one but that’s not a lot of my consumption..

If I had to use electricity to cook, I would only eat raw food ;·)
Honestly, I'm Italian, I love to cook. Proper food you can only do with gas.

Yea no gas out here. No water or sewer either.
Just the way I like it..?
