Feast or Famine, The off grid solar dilemma.

Don't get me started on the VA...

The VA wouldn't do my back surgery, said "No GUARINTEE Of Medical Improvment".

So I begged & borrowed until I could afford it myself, got my legs about 60% back, got out of the wheelchair, and they cut my disability rating.

I must have looked a damn fool digging from a wheelchair...
To know of all the free nonsense welfare given out for nonsensical reasons to nonsense people, I hate to even hear about a vet suffering through this nonscence crap…pisses me off …there will be a new day , one day… that’s all I have to say on the topic…jim out…

Is it realistic to just do without during difficult times? People did get by without electricity at all and not that long ago.
I really think it is. From a practical a stanpoint a "practice run" that illustrates how painless it is to camp out in your own house for a day or two should be educational.

It is what it is.

Up to a 10 year wait for a ramp or wheel chair lift to your house if you need one, artifical joints so worn out they find heavy metals in your tissues, the list goes on...

Improvise, Adapt & Overcome.

Some don't overcome, check the suicide rate among vets. I had a 'certified' mental health counselor (trying to tell me the pain from 5 breaks in my back was all in my head) tell me suicide WAS an option.

Just more nonsense to overcome...

Now I'm trying to grow citrus at 38.5°N and figure out which home canned pasta sauce I like best! The important things in life...

OH BABY!
Are They In For A Rude Awakening!

Skip the "Day Or Two", go right to a month...

I watched the video of a dimbulb that tried to live in his 'Survival Bunker', no power, water, even in the warm months, for 6 months,
Tapped out after 9 days.

this is why I am spending 50k this summer to rip off all the outer walls and old aluminum frame single pain glass and replace all with double pain
Double pain is about right.

Would be nice to have them but well beyond our budget.
We have ~ 80 m² (860 ft²) of single pane glass, including 2 m² (22 ft²) of single pane skylights. Ugh.

And the cathedral ceiling with bugger all insulation...

In a way an off grid AIO that allows you to fall back on the grid is like training wheels on a bicycle. You can get used to riding with less fear of falling down.

Man, IDK how you accomplish all of that in Japan. I find trying to do anything DIY in Korea to be an absolute frustration. I never “cracked the code.” Though there now four to five Ace stores in the Seoul area.

The countryside may be a bit better but I still see shops selling nothing but one or two items. One place may have nothing but plate compactors and another selling nothing but sewer pipe. You want a lock set? Go to alleyway in Jungno with tiny shops that sell nothing but lock sets. I can’t see Japan much different.

That’s one reason why I went back to the states.
between USMC/civil servant/contractor time I have been here for a total of 37 years.. i contract on the GOV side and the local side as a Japanese company, so I have contacts. some of it is language, others contacts. and i will retire here in 10 years or less, so I have a lot of things pushing me to excel. especially the whole retirement thing.

post links you silly hooker.. i wanna watch this stupidity. :ROFLMAO:

Caught an interesting news item on TV today concerning the topic of feast/famine of solar. A city in my State (Clarksville, AR) that many years back had gone alternative energy (mostly solar) has announced a plan to put in a pilot plant (5MW) to generate hydrogen from excess alternative energy production to be used later in either a traditional gas turbine or a fuel cell to make electricity. The idea is not new but the practicality of getting such a system up and operational is no easy feat.

If they get this to work in a practical way it could be a game changer.

:ROFLMAO: to clear the air.. i would not make it one day without electricity.. my wife would cut my balls off.. all three of them.

At the risk of polluting another thread, unless you married a Shaved Bigfoot that likes crapping randomly in the weeds and eating weeds, then it's flush toilets, lights on switches and a thermostat.

My wife likes to poke (or poke by) a fire, but HVAC comes from the thermostat, and when the switch is thrown, the lights better damned well come on!

The batteries were in the utility room which shares a wall with the kitchen. The production/battery voltage monitors were there and she asked how the 'Stereo' worked when she saw it... so there's that...

On Boobtube somewhere. It's been years since I saw it.
Around that 12/21/12 stupidity...

Apparently the dried 'Survival' food, or his water 'Filter' didn't work, wound up in the hospital with bowel problems wanting his mommy.

One of those 'Naked In The Woods' shows had their contestants on a recap show, so many cases of leishmaniasis, amoebic dysentery, all kinds of nasties they spent years getting over...

One of the 'Professional' survival shows, the actor contracted trichinosis and his joints were perminantly damaged.

Bot flies, screw worms, etc. Welcome to the food chain...

I have one of those. 4' 10" and 100 lbs of pure Korean gochu pepper. She worked around COLs, LTCs, and SGMs for 30 years and picked up a few mannerisms. She's literally gotten stupid assed government procedures/policies changed from the local borough (gu) level up to the ministerial level by calling and chewing ass. Sometimes it's impressive. Sometimes I need a bolt hole. Lol.

I've wondered if summer excess could be dumped into small scale carbon capture facilities and the credits could be sold to the energy companies.

i'd love to see this tech move forward, especially in efficiency , i agree this would be a complete game changer

I have to think that some really bright people are working on new and innovative ways to make use of excess PV. This is certainly one, even though the concept isn't new it's new to see someone acting on it. I don't look at mine as wasted at all, it's just that I don't need it at the time. But finding a good way to put it to work wouldn't be a bad thing.
