My Signature Solar experince. Good results for a manufacture problem. As a distributor I found SS helpful in diagnosing problem and honoring warranty for manufacture. We split the shipping pain. Fair enough.

In the HVAC industry distributors take care of shipping under one year warranty. If they didn't I would as a dealer. We don't lowball jobs and we take good care of our customers with 24 hr emergency service. I've had many of them for 21 years now. I advertised years 1 and 2 and word of mouth brought every customer afterward. If I find products not holding up to my standards, I stop purchasing them and tell the distributor and manufacturer why. If customers take care of me I take care of them. Otherwise, they can call someone else next time.

You see you are installer, service and repair industry. As a you stated you inform distributor of problem. Does your customer buy from your distributor then complain if they get incorrect problem or manufacture defect. Heck no. That is exactly why your industry exist to service people that have little knowledge but want to cut you out. Could not have said it better. You as installer, designer, service provider have an obligation to take care of your customer then take it up with distributor and or manufacturer. That is part of why people pay you for that knowledge and burden.

It doesn't matter where I get it, it's one year. No, I'm not the cheapest, but I return to fix it with a smile. I don't cover lightning, floods, water damage, weedeater damage, wind damage, pet urine/hair damage, clogged drains and air filters. Some customers like the peace of mind, not getting their property stolen or wife/daughter harassed.

Does it matter where the consumer gets it? Do you honor products bought from online? Do you charge service calls to check out products?

If they buy a product from me, I take care of my customers. First year no labor charge. If they buy a brand that from another dealer and that dealer can't take care of them for whatever reason, then I will charge my normal labor rates. If they buy it online, then there is no part or labor warranty. If I buy a part online, it is covered for one year, no matter whether I get reimbursed or not. That is why I get referrals constantly. I have integrity and will do the best job I can do for my customers.
