I swear my wife is bored or looking for ways to say “ See this Solar doesn’t work”.

How many times now have I asked “Can you please do the laundry once a week during the day?”
Nah every night.
Pair of socks dirty. Do laundry.
Rug got a leaf on it.
Do the laundry.
Washcloth dirty
Do the laundry.

This runs the well pump, the water heater and not to mention a Dryer.

Am I the only one who has this issue?

It’s no wonder I dont have any hair left..

Madam does the laundry during the day anyway, I'm sure she thinks the washer will explode or something if it's not monitored every 5 minutes.

The Thai maid is terrified of the machine (must be black-magic) and doesn't do the ironing "correctly". I do wonder why we pay her, mainly to push the mud around on the floor and spend most mornings gassing with my lovely :)

Thai country-girl, left school at age12 (she's 74 now), knows that "big sunshine, solar cell makes big electric", married 20+ years, love her to bits!

I feel you. When we went with TOU I said to my family, "Look, I'm going to make this as confusing as possible. During the Winter peak hours are 8-10am and 3-8pm except weekends and holidays and during the Summer it's only 3-8pm. Peak hours are 25 cents per kwh and off peak is 5 cents per kwh. We have 15kwh of capacity on the critical load so do the math on all the appliances you use during peak hours. And God help you if you use the oven or the dryer during peak hours!"

I bought a brand new nice home in 2004 on top of a mnt..My wife had previously used the dishwasher in our old house for every 5 dishes it seemed..
I tried to explain this was wasteful and only 2 people don’t need to use this thing unless there is company…
It didn’t work … she would run it for everything …every day ..never ended.

So the day we moved in to the new place when alone I removed the off/ on switch cover plate on the wall, disconnected and taped off the hot wire…and put back the cover….

later that day I informed her that the brand new dishwasher wouldn’t start.. wont even power up..somthing must be wrong with it.…!

can you fix it?…she asked

No …..I’m not an electrician…

can the builder fix it…?

No ,…he moved to Spain 2 days ago..

Can we call someone..?

No, that voids the warranty…

Does that mean we have to…? Really wash them ..?

Yep…

Time went on… every now and then the topic came up and I would reminded her how many people get electrocuted working on electric stuff….

eventually we sold the house … I put the switch wire back before the inspection and everyone is still alive , married and healthy…

No , I never said a word about what happened … … im a chicken ?…

True story.

I couldn’t get away with once a week.
My kids are far too skilled at getting folded clothes back into the hampers

I hear ya.
If I still had kids I would agree but it’s just us 2.

It’s not like we are going through 2 outfits a day up in here.

We could easily do a couple loads on Saturday but no as soon as something appears in the hamper it’s got to be washed.

God forbid if someone would come by and check the hamper.
Tsk tsk. Dirty clothes..

Atleast here I have gotten established a certain time during the day where the machine can be run...
11:30 - 12:00 noon (ish) startup. So the sun is properly up, even in winter.
The rotation and pumping is small fry. What really pulls amps is the heating of the water.

Gotta say, I count myself lucky.
We have solar from the original idea that my wife wanted some type of backup for the well. She's a prepper. When I explained that it would be more ideal to have a full system, she was all in. Now we are looking at a heat pump dryer. She is interested in an indoor system to hang clothes to dry. She's actually the one bugging me to turn off lights. She wants to understand the system and the best way to take advantage of it.

I feel like the luckiest boy in the world (okay until I read @Tulex's post while I was typing - like 2nd place now):
  • Wife and I do 1.5 loads of laundry a week. We both believe that there is a clean to dirty spectrum and multiple wearings are often prudent (socks and underwear excluded).
  • 2 kids do their own laundry, and they each have 1 load every other week.
  • At least 90% compliance with TOU requirements though the bulk of it is with the programmable thermostat.
Since our RV at HBR is only powered by one of the two inverters forming split phase (5kVA to the whole unit), she has enough awareness to know that there should be no more than 2 high drain items active at any time.

Where I lose the battle is with lights and ceiling fans...

You’re a lucky dude in that respect.

I guess it’s hard to change 50+ years of habits.

Still it makes me crazy!!!!!

You guys definitely hit the lottery on that one.

Like I said it probably ingrained in her over 50+years.
It’s kind of unrealistic to expect it this late in the game but still..???
