Upgrading 15s Battery to 16s

With the JK, you might save some money in the long run.
Quite some people with jbd/overkill add an active balancer later.
JK had that already build-in.

That is allegedly the actual JK BMS store.

That's the only way I would consider using AliExpress.

I would still prefer ordering from a North American source when possible.

Oh and those are the connectors you want for the JBD Bluetooth port on the smart BMS. I ordered the RS485 adapters from overkill.
You could use the JBD with the 15s battery and rewire to 16. I started with an 8S pack and rewired to 16s.

Thank you very much, it is very hard to tell from mobile who the seller was on aliexpress so I wasn't sure. I'll check it out tomorrow from a desktop.

Regarding JBD, it sounds like the JKs have better balancing which I think will be key to the success of this upgrade project with the cells that don't quite match.

What would you recommend? I know that the Overkill BMS is well regarded but I was hoping to avoid that price tag.
Overkill uses JBD. I have three 250A JBD BMSs and they are all great. I would buy them again.

You didn't answer the question: How much current do you need your BMS to handle?

Missed the question apparently.

I was aiming at 100 amp BMSs just because that supports 1C rate on the batteries, but I suppose a 60 amp BMS basically gets me to max capacity for the 3kW EG4 inverter I'm eyeing for this project.

I would definitely use more than a 60A BMS for that inverter. You want one rated higher than the max current you could draw. 100A should be fine.
 
I will have two batteries in parallel at least, but yes I was thinking 100 amp would be appropriate anyway.

It is likely to only be wired such that I'll use 1500 watts of its output at the most with what I have planned. Of course plans do have a way of expanding over time!
 
While an impressive piece of hardware, a Sol Ark 15k is a nearly $7000 inverter, and I'm looking at the $700 EG4 3k. I can't spend an order of magnitude more on the inverter. I have no need of future proofing my batteries for a monstrous inverter like the 15k. If I ever get to a fully self sufficient state that would require something like that, I'll surely have better batteries than these to make it happen.

With two batteries in parallel, I'd use two 100A BMSs. That way you can completely remove one battery for maintenance if needed and leave the other one working.

The normal load isn't an issue generally, it is startup current and other temporary surges that will get you.

Do you have a suggestion on where to purchase from? I had been planning on signature solar because I've heard good things about their support.

Edit: also not sure that I really need as much as 5k anyway, though if it was the same price as I'm looking at I would go for it. My plan is to use this to run my home server rack (about 350 watts peak), with the ability to provide backup power for my furnace (250 watts while running) and one refrigerator and one chest freezer (100 watts each running, though the refrigerator defrost cycle is approximately 600 watts for 30 minutes once a day).

It will be set up in such a way that I can use it to bolster my small generator by using it to load level while the generator is running, allowing the generator to provide a constant output (its about a 1200 watt unit) to charge the batteries and use the battery/inverter system to handle all the sudden load changes that my generator struggles with.
