diy solar

Scam from hell.

The most shocking thing to me about this thread is a house built in 2019 is so poorly insulated... I'd like to hear more details on that.

It pains me to see the endless cookie cutter neighborhoods going up, sometimes on flood plains, with the same dumb non solar friendly roof lines, packed in like sardines with barely any yard, so no ground mount, same old inefficient HVAC, etc. PHIUS is an alien concept to the builders round here and if you bring this stuff up you're some sort of greenie dem commie pinko etc, as they snort gasoline and scream 'merica at you.

:ROFLMAO:

Damn!

PHIUS is interesting. Unfortunately, the costs are notably higher for single-family homes. all their cost studies are basically for multi-family dwellings. Builders can't charge a premium, and consumers don't want to pay.

My 2021 house in Florida was built to the absolute minimum possible standards. I really don't think the insulation would actually pass the test but they've been throwing houses up so quick the inspectors are balls to the wall and really don't care.
I am building my own house now and I really care.

I can totally relate.
Right now i have trouble with a shady car dealreship that i went to to buy my first EV. A Toyota Proace.
6 months in, i still not have the car not my money back. I had to contact a lawyer to try to sort this out.
There are a lot of dishonest people and dishonest companies, i should have consulted a lawyer since the beginning.

Thank you.
They are a legit company, you won't have any issues.
I wish they weren't ~13 hours from me, my wallet is glad 😂

yep same as mine... bought an infrared thermal heat sensor and the walls have no ounce of insulation. the attic should have at least 12 inches evenly spread but it's about 6" and patchy in some areas.

Yikes. I have a little phone-mount FLIR 1, but I haven't aimed it at my house yet. We added 800 sqft in 2005, and when we did, we blew in a solid 12" of insulation over the entire area. I've cut/drilled into several sections of exterior walls, so I know I'm R13 there. As part of the add-on, we removed at least 50' of exterior stucco with 100% R13 coverage.

I probably have a lot of leaks and gaps here and there... this is probably a don't ask-don't tell situation for me... don't wanna know. :ROFLMAO:

yh i am not going to do that in this crappy home I spent too much money owning a home than renting. will suck it up for now. when i build my own home i will get it done the right way.

My house is cement brick originally built with just a swamp cooler, retro-fitted with an HVAC. There is ZERO insulation on the side walls about 6" in the attic. The windows are pathetic, but are aluminum double pane. I'll just overbuild my solar to make up for it, then keep the place cold enough to hang meat in the summer while my neighbors all pay thru the nose. I'm stunned my bills were not higher than they were.

I got overcharged slightly, but not too bad. I didn't buy from a door knocker, but a local firm through a local scheme.

If I'd known then what I know now I would have had a 3.6kW inverter instead of 3kW, but only one 2.4kWh battery.

The reason for the inverter is the price difference is minimal, but 3.6kW would be enough to run my base load plus a 3kW kettle which a 3kW one won't. I had to buy a 2kW kettle which isn't as good.

The reason behind only one battery is that they seemed to mark the price of the battery up a lot, and with prices dropping I could have bought an extra 4.8kWh battery for what they charged my for the 2.4kWh one. I will still buy a 4.8kWh one to add to my system when funds allow.

Their ROI figures turned out to be pessimistic. With the right tariffs, careful use and overnight charging I'm getting that down by a couple of years at least.
