Small home hybrid setup... but hit a snag

Split your fuse box, Lighting and sockets to the solar. Hot water, cooker, air con to the grid.

Inverter with off grid capabilities WITHOUT battery

I can live without hot showers and air conditioning.

Inverter with off grid capabilities WITHOUT battery

Sadly all nonsense. My off hybrid inverter tops up from the grid if more power is required and switches to bypass in overload conditions. Grid tie requires much paperwork and extra expense to comply with the electric company and state rules. Most electric companies require installation by a...

    Active balancer or not?

It would depend which type of active balancer you use. The ones without capacitors are usually not 'active', but just dump the extra volts. You can't trust the Chinese, they will say anything to sell their products. I have bother (Heltec style and chip style), the chip style just doesn't work...

    Inverter prices - $250+ for a medium grade 1500 watt. Lifepo4 up 15%+

7-14 days to get to me from China, usually free delivery.

    Inverter prices - $250+ for a medium grade 1500 watt. Lifepo4 up 15%+

Still cheap in China. Suspect it's US suppliers gouging everyone. All the big boys around the world are taking the opportunity to raise prices.

    Energy Conservation

I see Tesla are asking customers not to charge their cars at peak time in Texas as it may take out the grid. https://www.thedrive.com/news/tesla-asks-texan-owners-to-limit-charging-due-to-heat-wave?fbclid=IwAR1CVRUvGGgrbBBtgLoPOwH2vLGt8n6aRMG9TrSSwBoyFlDDzKNRPWAro5k

Inverter with off grid capabilities WITHOUT battery

You're making a mistake in your thinking ........ off grid is the way to go. Why do you want to provide power to the grid? 1. The grid doesn't want your power. 2. The grid won't pay much for your excess power. 3. Grid tie costs a lot more money in installation, inverter and permissions. 4. When...

    Energy Conservation

It's all here. https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20181002-how-long-did-ancient-people-live-life-span-versus-longevity Study of historic figures vs modern day. "Of 397 ancients in total, 99 died violently by murder, suicide or in battle. Of the remaining 298, those born before 100BC lived to a...

    Energy Conservation

Off topic, While factually correct most of the deaths lowering the average age before about 1950 were children. If you lived to age 15, you had the same chance of making 70 as those of us today (excluding war). Socrates (399BC) died age 70, and that was from poison. Oddly enough, While prior...

    Energy Conservation

I live in the tropics, temperature is normally 30-35c and humid ..... cool at 9am this morning 28c and 75%. I used air-con for about 2hrs last month (28c), just while I fall asleep, usually a fan is good enough. Better to get acclimatised to the weather than to use air-con all the time, makes...

    Energy Conservation

Stop using electricity for heating and cooling. You don't need air-con, a fan will do. You don't need hot showers, cold is good for you. You don't need heating, wear more clothes. Cooking can be done on propane. My entire house is now LED (mainly rings to replace my circular florescents). I...

    Panel shipping is hard, apparently!

I've had the same happen (2 panels), but the panels never arrived, the shipping company returned them to the supplier without ever contacting me.

Battery not showing up on Smart BMS App

I have mine set to 3.65 high cell volt, and 0.5 difference. Best to set both BMS to the same settings, but the numbers are up to you. I would say 0.26 is a bit on the low side.

Its going to be a cold long dark winter.

I've got 12TB of movies, TV shows, music, books on my NAS. No need for broadcasters. It's not as if they've made any movies worth watching in the past ten years.

    Mc4 replacement

Shouldn't you position them where no water falls? Mine are all tucked and tie wrapped up under the panels, 100% dry. Quite frankly, my crimps are more likely to fail than corrosion, once you have a working connection leave it alone.

    Mc4 replacement

It makes no sense at all, they rarely fail.

    Daly BMS battery voltage question

Unlikely the cells are at those volts. Would assume you've connected the BMS cell wires in a random order. You did check the pins on the BMS loom step up, 0,3.5, 7, 10.5, 14, etc with a voltmeter before plugging the connector into the BMS didn't you?

PowMr LVM 48 volt 5000 watt hybrid All-in-One (120 v) does not see my Solar Panels FINALLY flipped the switch today!

Measure voltages at series o/p of solar panels, before breaker, after breaker, at inverter. My PowMr worked perfectly first time (5k5 VMPlus), early days as it's only been running for 2 months. For $430 it's great.

best brands of inverters? best bank for the buck?

Me too! I paid just under $1000 ($940) for 18x 200AH second hand CALB +BMS, which give me about 6kWhr of storage. (2 spares so I could chuck the worst performers). No idea how long they will last. 940/6000 = 15.5c/Watt

DIY Solar forum dodging geo-political context?

I lived in Cornwall until 2009, the last year we had 1 week that wasn't wet and windy. Some of my pals had large solar installations on their homes, financed by the government, that deal is finished now. PS. I also recall those warm childhood summers. Selective memory or climate change? I don't...

TEOTWAWKI ..... is it getting close?

Yes, EMP affects long wires. No long wire (or a fuse at the end of the wire) = no damage.

DIY Solar forum dodging geo-political context?

Solar is not much use in the UK, it's cloudy and rains all the time, so not much interest. It's much better in the tropics where I get the same amount of sun nearly every day of the year (even in monsoon).

Tired of pumping energy into the grid

Cost me $1000 for 16x second hand 200ah CALB cells inc BMS. I get 6-7kWhr out of them.

TEOTWAWKI ..... is it getting close?

I don't really worry about nuclear war, I don't believe EMP would actually work (beyond grid and comms) all the home appliances and cars would probably still work (which is why I have off grid solar for most of my home). I'm more a 'zombie apocalypse' sort of guy ...... which is why I keep a...

TEOTWAWKI ..... is it getting close?

So we've all got our solar power and battery banks up and running. But what other precautions are we making for the end of civilisation as we know it? Anyone built a bunker in the woods, filled with shelf stable foods? I'll admit to a few 45Kg sacks of rice, some spare 15Kg propane cylinders...

    DIY vs solar contractor?

Almost all of Asia is free from such oppression, I'm in Thailand at the moment. Until 2 months back I was using grid tie for over 2 years and winding my meter backwards in the day, meter reader didn't care. Now I've moved to off grid.
