measurement unit consensus.

How is lumber typically designated and actually measured in other countries?
millimeter or centimeter and it's actual size.

But here's the thing - a 2x4 is not 2 inches by 4 inches. They are actually 1.5 inches by 3.5 inches

Yeah, that's one of those unnecessary barrier to entry to an industry, same for like law and medicine, they make up their secrete language with random insider wisdom so that it's harder for the common people to get access.

How do I know, I'm a German electric engineer, we got our own secrete code :p we create our own units and standards (DIN)

I would love if we went metric. As an engineer almost every design I touched for the las 30 years was in millimeters.

I learned metrics as a teen buying Mexican weed and driving on the streets of Mexicali. That made it easy to pick up a metric wrench and work on a datsun when I turned wrenches at the dealership. Then I built a Toyota car plant in Indiana and all the prints were metric. I thanked my early teen education on the street for being able to use metric prints to layout the conveyor lines. The contractor did have to replace my 6' folding rule though for a metric folding rule. Now that I'm building reusable rockets for NASA my metrics education is still right there with me. The skin of the booster and upper stage averages 4mm in thickness. We're shooting for 3mm.
please give me your source. I could use a good smoke by now ;)

Yeah, difficult to get weed in Holland, is it ;·)

Still, why does the US military measure everything in metric, then?
Well, pretty much everything, nautical miles for sea/air distances and feet for airplane altitudes, but everybody uses those.

Did we mention already how things can go very expensively wrong?

This mishap when NASA and ESA worked together on this 100 million dollar project and it did launch and everything looked great. But then would not slow down and overshot by FARRR!!!

Now the issue is not the units used in it self. It is the usage of both ;)

Additional data-point to @eXodus comment: dimensions are metric and actual:

However because of moisture content and other factors so called 'sawn' wood (raw lumber) has some higher tolerances compared to 'planed' wood.

The maximum permissible dimensional deviations of sawn lumber:
  • Thickness and width ≤ 100 mm: - 1.0 … + 3.0 mm
  • Thickness and width ≥ 100 mm: - 2.0 ... + 4.0 mm
  • Length, when sorted by length: - 25 ... + 50 mm
  • Length when cut to size: ± 2.0 mm
Maximum permissible dimensional deviations of planed lumber:
  • Thickness ≤ 20 mm: ± 0.5 mm
  • Thickness ≥ 20 mm *: ± 1.0 mm
  • Width ≤ 100 mm: ± 1.0 mm
  • Width ≥ 100 mm: ± 1.5 mm
  • Length, when sorted by length: - 25 ... + 50 mm
  • Length when cut to size: ± 2.0 mm
* The permitted thickness deviation for floor board is always ± 0.5 mm

Sure. If you drive south (uphill from your place) to -3m elevation there's a town named Heber. There you will find an air conditioned 5,000sqft. lounge that I'm fairly certain will satisfy your needs. I haven't been been there or even by that way that way in almost a decade but I'm told it's the fastest growing lowdown city in America.

Plain and simple.
Americans aren't interested in the metric system.
We like doing our own thing. We are leaders, not followers.
(Even if it doesn't make sense to anyone else)
Ya darn tootin .. we don’t need any advice on how to live our life …or count our achievements .!

I respect and love this site.

I get to ramble, which I excel at.

I know that many of us have better intuitive feeling with weird units like elbows, tows, thumbs and what have we? feet?

Given the highly scientific nature of this forum I suggest we move to metric.

Ohh my ohh my how those French rule the world. Other than the fact that all of them speak well English yet refuse to in their own country. I have nothing bad to say about them. In fact I have quite some more good things to say.
Well pal we got measurements in the USA that your metric system can’t convert over or match…Anyone that ever worked with a crew building somthing knows what the terms mean and how to understand them .. a couple of the colorful terms I can not say here, Haa. but can you give me the metric conversion of “ tiny bit “or a “smidgin” or a “ tat “ ..?
no good reason to change what worked enough to save the whole world 2 times …thousands of MILES across the ocean…that’s many FEET deep and is sorta freezing at 32 “degrees F”.

Well, the UK has been mostly metric since the '80s (changed money units in the early '70s) and there's not many people nearly as conservative as the British.

Or as malleable socially in the last 60 years either…..just because you agree to change doesn’t mean it was smart…

Yup.
Common core math, gender uncertainty, and woke philosophy sure are what sets America apart.
Just a phase we’re going thru.. we will fix the problem as we always do…growing is always painful to the participants.

I really hope so Jim.
I am watching all this from a very safe distance, and still wondering WTF is really going on over your way.
Well, said politely , sometimes a fool has to act out enough so as everyone realizes they are really a fool ..then the pendulum always swings back. Don’t trust everything you hear on most of the Pop-media and only half of what you see ..it’s starting to come around over here..people are getting tired of this foolishness…..you will see …this year…

That comes very close to my own theory about all this nonsense.
I hope and pray you are right, and the tide is indeed turning.
Its becoming more and more difficult to sift out what is true from what is fake.
