California proposes “blatant seizure of property” in solar ruling

"The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) is soon to vote on a proposed decision that is expected to be harmful to the value of rooftop solar for renters in multifamily housing, farms, and schools.

The decision would disallow residents of multi-meter properties to consume their own rooftop solar production, even if they own the solar array. The policy forces customers to first sell their solar production to the utility, and then buy it back at higher rates.

“The CPUC is proposing a blatant seizure of property,” said the Solar Rights Alliance.

California’s existing Virtual Net Metering and Net Energy Metering Aggregation programs allow properties with multiple meters to install a single solar array for the entire property, sharing one system’s electricity and associated net metering credits with all customers and meters on the property. The proposed decision states that these customers should be limited in how much of their own solar production they can use, even if it is stored in their own battery.

“It would force customers in multi-meter properties—such as renters, small farmers, schools, and colleges—to sell all of their generation to the utility at low rates and buy it back at full retail rates,” said the California Solar and Storage Association (CALSSA)."

I'm pretty sure this will spread to single family homes next.

I have a hunch that our governments will create regulations against off-grid systems in due time. It would be very easy to use a satellite to tell law enforcement where the non regulated solar arrays are mounted.
In my city in NC, buy all/sell all grid-tie is the only option. Off-grid is not allowed but some of us hide it. Utility buys at $0.01/kwh and sells you back at $0.11/kwh. Or just not do solar and buy at $0.12. I’ve posted this gripe a few times. You can have grid tie with batteries but you fill them up at the $0.11/kwh rate.

My firm already is using drones to do tax assessment with AI recognition of assets like panels, sheds, etc. Nowhere to hide folks. The positive is that I’m no longer developing drones to kill people, so that’s progress.

This is why I've disguised my solar setup as a backyard coal power plant. Less grief that way.

Every time I hear about some new rule/law/compliance/proposal thing in California, I become more and more grateful that I don't live there.
It’s a bit strange to me that the same crowd out there keep voting the people in who do this stuff..over and over and over and etc…..
maybe they enjoy getting spanked….and taken to the cleaners in everyway possible.
They created their own master , let them serve that master.

Another sad new. We live in a era of decadence, caos, war and injustice. I hope this law never comes to pass.
We are a few in this forum, maybe we could organize something to protest/fight it.

The voting majority are not the ones who bear the load.
Rather, recipients of the largesse. (and often the victim of unintended consequences.)

How exactly would you win? Do you not realize that California is home to most of the military industrial complex, the Air Force with major bases with nuclear weapons, the Marines with Camp Pendelton and Air Station Miramar, the Navy with home to many nuclear submarines and multiple air craft carriers and their supporting ships. Also the mountains and desert would provide a formidable terrain to cross and California ports up and down the coast could not be stopped from importing goods from the rest of the world. Yes, go to war with California. You would lose and we would be laughing and drinking our home grown wine!
Can just we drop this part off the conversation please?

I will defer to your thoughts… it just seems crazy out there since daddy took the T- bird away…

It is bizarre that the voters that vote in the craziness complain about the craziness they support and created. And when these crazies move into different areas to leave their craziness, they then complain about how conservative their new neighborhood is. Sadly, this is first hand experience and not some talking point

I was contemplating moving to Tennessee, but New Yorkers and Californians have driven up the price in the last few years to give me a second thought about that. Developers bought up land, put in cookie cutter houses, duplexes and tiny yards yet the local across the way has tens acres and shakes his head at the crazies. Meanwhile back in New York 500,000 people have left in the last year. No big deal right? The politicians are starting to realize that those that left were the affluent ones who contributed greatly to their economy and tax revenues. Oops

Just look who is counting the votes. You will understand.

Trucking companies, Yellow freight and CFL of California have both closed this year. Regulated to death. The manufacturing firm that I work at is definitely taking a hit with crazy regulations. On top of that all our doors have to be locked from entry because of zombies. A nightmare at our shipping dock.
