It's definitely an issue.

It's one reason I'm not a huge fan of electrics yet. Not because they are more missile-like but,

I think the batteries STILL have a weight issue and make the car clumsy.

I'm driving a motorhome right now that gets 6.5-7.5 mpg. That's like what? 3kwh per mile or something?

Lets do some math here.. Don't be afraid, this is simple math.

Which is worse: A) Two cars traveling 40 mph in a head on collision or B) A single car hitting a brick wall (immovable object) in a 40 mph collision?

NO it does not.. Not only is the video irrelevant, its not even close. also, neither of those vehicles in his video were electric. All he did is post exactly what I told him not to.. that there is nothing we can do about a large heavy vehicle hitting a small one. I think my actual words were along the line of "Can't fix the problem of a semi-truck hitting a ford focus" or something like that.

The physical size of a vehicle makes a huge HUGE difference.. in fact, of all the variables, its right up there on top of the list with speed, angle, etc.

Cars are designed to crumple.. the smaller the vehicle, the less crumple zone available. It is the crumple zone that mostly saves your life.

Double the impact time to zero, halve the g forces.. The more crumpling time, the lower the g forces. It is irrespective of mass or velocity.

I didn't follow 100% but let's say your fully electric honda civic crashes into your gasoline civic head on?

I mean yes, to your point, each driver would probably be fine but all things being equal, gasser civic driver has a higher likelihood of having his testicles shoved back into his body where of course they revert to being ovaries.

It is the crumple zone that saves your life.. mostly.. Not entirely, but mostly.. Let me rephrase to be clear(er).. The crumple zone in front, irrespective of speed, mass, angle, weight of driver, or whether they bought regular beer or light beer, is among the biggest and most significant factors in the g-forces being applied to the squishy biological idiot driving the vehicle.

2 cars.. 5000 lbs traveling 40 mph.. One has a 30 inch crumple zone, the other has a 6 foot crumple zone.. The squishy biological inside will experience far less impact forces with the larger crumple zone.

The mass of the vehicle means nothing in that example because both masses go to zero against an immovable object.

What it boils down to is pretty simple.. The more time you have to slow down, the less impact forces you experience.. The crumple zone is the area of the vehicle that allows you to slow down sloooower.. rather than coming to a complete stop instantly.

There is a difference. Mass does make a difference, I've never said it doesn't.. but on the scales we're talking about concerning EV's and ICE's, it is not a significant one.. and certainly not "save the planet-kill everyone on the road". Such statements and headlines are the signature of the stupid and ignorant..

One circumstance where mass would make a statistical difference is in a direct, drivers door centered, side impact.. Where the car being hit on the side is static (carA), and the EV hitting that vehicle (carB) is the one moving and colliding with the drivers door.

The increased mass of the EV (carB) would more easily overcome the inertia of (carA) before it begins to move sideways, thus, this would likely result in an increase of the drivers door deflecting inwards towards the driver.
However, it should be specifically spelled out that this would be a very special and rather rare occurrence. Side impacts happen all the time, they are not unusual, but side impacts were carA is not moving are rare, and side impacts that also center on the drivers door perfectly are even more rare.
And for a small disclaimer: I'm not even sure what I just said is absolutely correct. The physics of vehicle collisions can be counter-intuitive.. in fact, of all the things I'm somewhat familiar with (not an expert like BobB or BatshitCrazy) , its one of the more counter-intuitive subjects on the list.

As I said before.. bumper height and vehicle size (crumple zone) are HUGE variables... they pretty much dominate all other considerations.

A crumple zone is irrelevant if the other vehicle's bumper comes through your windshield instead of hitting your bumper..

Thats just it. The cars wont be identical when in 10 years youve added 2,000 lbs to 25% of them that used to be identical. Its very significsnt when studies showed when a car outweighed the other by 1,000 lbs the fatality rate soared by 47%.
These are peoples mothers, daughters, babies that are going to be killed.
