Luyuan battery case

I could have purchased prebuilt as in server rack batteries. Much simpler. But I love DIY, reason I chose this direction. If I have a question, concern or suggestion Amy is just a message away.

Exactly. More Ah in a smaller footprint for less money, that's why I DIY. Now, my addiction with blue components can't be explained away as being less expensive so I'm working on that argument.

I’m developing that same addiction. I can’t wait until my boxes show up. I was watching a teardown video of the SOK server rack batteries on current connected’s youtube channel. They aren’t so dissimilar from these DIY packs, so I feel pretty good about it. The only notable difference was in the SOK battery, there were additional metal racks for each set of 8 cells. I don’t really think that would be feasible with the large 280ah cells anyway.
 
Well I would get more batteries, but some people are afflicted with blue addiction.

For those of you with a 16s box and 280Ah EVE cells, how much room is there on the long side of the batteries (short side of the cells)? I'm trying to figure out if I can fit warming pads against the batteries.
 
I didn't ask for the Steve model as it did not exist at the time. I actually ordered around end of February and had to wait for the Chinese holiday to end before the boxes were built.

I can say the product is not consistent. For example, I setup the balance leads using the same bottom case and found the bars that hold the balance leads are not the same length from box to box. I haven't assembled that box yet but I'll probably have to add another sheet or two of poron to take up the extra length.

It is an OK product if you can tinker. If you are not handy, might be better off not buying these until the kinks are worked out.

I need another box for my golf cart, not sure if I really want to go with Luyuan until the kinks are worked out. If you watched the video, you should notice I did not review the product- no pros or cons. Hopefully these improve. I have enough things to build, I'm really not in the mood to modify another box.
Seeing Luyaun doesn’t actually make the case (they are primarily a cell reseller), I think waiting for these cases to be “prime time where no tweaking is needed” is going to be a while.

What I liked was a case that was customized to my needs with a contact that has had good track record (plus known good cells). With that I knew I may have to spend some time tinkering to polish it off to my liking.

If I needed 5 cases the tinkering would probably get old but so far for my first unit I’m happy.

I have another box in the house waiting on final assembly so I put the cells in and checked for you. 7/32" clearance on the side with cells pushed towards center, a 1/4" bolt won't quite go in and this was with separator sheet out on the outside.

You do have the option to use the center divider bracket which is about 3/4" wide.

Thank you for the pictures and measurements. I didn't realize the divider was "hollow". I think I can work with that.

The plan had been to use RV tank heaters that have been adapted (by the mfg) to work on batteries. The space on the side would be enough for the warmer.

However, the warmers seem to require direct adhesion (my current warmers work that way). I would really like to get away from direct adhesion as it makes it very difficult to replace on cell in the series. Adhering it to a sheet of aluminum - instead of directly to the battery - is an alternative, but that increases how thick it is and may keep it from fitting. I'm going poke around in the battery warmer threads to see what I can come up with. Low amperage for slow heating and something that can cover the entire side of the battery.

The RV tank heaters I used in the last build were quite expensive but they were custom made to fit the entire long side of the 12v battery. That was great coverage and worked incredibly well. My batteries were warm and cozy. :)

Your picture also shows that there is plenty of room between the tops of the cells and the top of the battery box. Enough room to put a Class T fuse in there if I decide to go that way.

My Luyuan shipment should be at my house tomorrow! Apparently the shipment notification I setup with the shipper didn't work.

I think I'm going to use the UltraHeat warming pads. I might have to grease the sides of the box to get the cells to fit. I'll do a dry run with them before adhering the pads to the cells.

Honestly I would not glue the heat pads to any cell or the casing. I'd suggest sandwiching between FR4 sheets is likely the best option.
 
My 8s 280k case has a decent space to the sides of the cells, maybe 1/8th each side even with the insulator sheets.

If I were to add heating to my case I’d add it to the bottom.

My current 4s batteries have the heating pads adhered to the sides. The warming pads are designed that way and operate optimally when adhered. They radiate the heat one way, into the battery. When they're operating, the side of the heating pad isn't even warm as checked with my hand. An IR camera would likely find some leaching of heat and call me a liar.

There are plenty of arguments against adhering the pads to the cells. Mainly to do with replacing a bad cell. I've had all those arguments with myself many times. The batteries were installed four years ago and have never been moved within the camper.

I thought long and hard about doing just that with my current batteries. But the chance of damaging the heating elements due to the weight was more luck than I had stored up. My main reason for putting the heating pad on the bottom was that heat rises. But a pad on each side has worked very well.

The warranty on these pads is the lifetime of the battery. The company has been good to work with.
 
I wonder if you affixed the heating pad to an aluminum plate it’d accomplish the same thing without sticking anything to the cell wrappers.

But alas you’re prob running into a space issue then.
 
I received the shipment of my LiFePO4 cells this evening. I wasn't exactly sitting on the front porch all day waiting for the UPS Man, but I did have my Ring doorbell on Live mode most of the afternoon. He still snuck up on me and had one box on the porch before I could get outside.

A couple of the cardboard boxes looked like they had been worked over but the cells inside are absolutely perfect. Amy went above and beyond to ensure the cells arrived safe. The battery box is a beast! The four spring loaded side handles are a luxury I wasn't expecting.

The boxes weren't handed off to me in their right orientation. From the indentations on the underside of the top layer of foam I don't think these cells spent much time recently right-side up. I checked the terminals and none of them are bent. A block of foam between the terminals would help I think.
