    Chargeverter efficiency is around 75%

Sorry, weather was bad and now I am at work for a 48 hour shift and then headed to the snow to play. I dind't get a chance to test the MAgnum but I will. Quite possible I made some error in measuring. Here is how I did it. Clamp on meter at the generator. Fluke to measure voltage at the...

    Chargeverter efficiency is around 75%

I was having an issue with a breaker popping while using the chargeverter. In the investigation process I discovered that to put 5.1kW into the batter bank using the chargeverter I was pulling 6.8kW from the generator. I was a little surprised that the efficiency was that low. That is like a...

EG4 low V disconnect, need a low power charger?

Thanks. That seems so bizarre. With a typical batteries, put them in parallel and the low batt will just pull power from the others. How close in voltage does it need to be? I could find nothing in the docs, do you know where I can find more information?

EG4 low V disconnect, need a low power charger?

Thanks for the reply FG. He has MPP solar inverters/charge controller. He has 4-5 other EG4's that are fine to run the inverter. Only 1 got down to charge protect. I don't understand why SS would tell him to buy a small (5 to 15 amp) charger. Maybe there is a reason or maybe SS is wrong again...

EG4 low V disconnect, need a low power charger?

Friend has an EG4 battery that went into low V protect mode. Signature says he need a small charger to bring it out of protect mode. The manual just says to charge. I don't see what the difference is between a charger and solar panels. Anyone know if you do indeed need a charger and why?

Seems MPP dropped a new inverter...a split phase 10KW

Having helped install two MPP off grid power systems, there is no way I would ever buy an MPP product. Both installs had multiple major issues. They are loud, run hot and love to forget settings. Even the up and down buttons don't work right on the menu. One system is still managing to run. It...

Victron is Over-priced Eurotrash. Why would anybody buy Victron over an AiO?

Easy. The power company wanted over 50k years ago to come out to my place. While I don't run Victron, I run quality gear and my power stays up and my chest freezer cold. Buddy of mine is in the process of getting rid of his MPP inverters and redoing his system after a couple of months of...

Problem running a washing machine on solar?

Glad you got one that works. Like I said I have been running the MagnaSines for many years and have never found anything that they won't run.

Problem running a washing machine on solar?

What inverter do you have? I have run MagnaSine inverters for years and have yet to find any device that has a problem with it. What exactly is the problem?

High frequency verses low frequency inverters

Low frequency inverters are heavier and more expensive to build. They are better at starting large inductive loads or dealing with multiple sure loads. High frequency is lighter and cheaper to build. This is the primary reason why they are made. For me, I have way too many inductive loads and...

Finally ready to purchase BUT which inverter to purchase?

Sounds like somemore homework is needed. You are being asked important questions if you want a cogent answer.

    Anyone used Expert Power?

Thanks for the reply. I have had problems with the Docan 280aH cells. Maybe the 100aH are better but I am seeking a truly responsible battery vendor.

    Anyone used Expert Power?

I am wondering if anyone has used Expert Power to purchase cells. I have had less than stellar experiences buying cells directly from China or from the stateside warehouse suppliers. This are the cells: https://www.expertpower.us/products/16-3-2v-100ah-lifepo4-cells?variant=40264336638050...

Safe to Power a DC to DC charger *Directly* via Alternator?

Well, it depends on the alternator. I think if the alternator has residual magnetism it will start producing without a battery. In which case a cap would be fine to smooth out the power. If you have a brand new alt, spin it and see if it puts out.

    Laundry and off-grid... Hmmm?

I just have regular laundry machines and do laundry during the day.

Safe to Power a DC to DC charger *Directly* via Alternator?

Yep, the field coil has to be energized for the alt to put out and the battery does indeed help smooth the output. It could be a very small battery.

I just bought 6 EG4 batteries and have a magnum inverter charger.

Yeah, the manual is worthless. The one time I called Siganture's tech people they knew less than I did. The BMS's opinion of SOC seems pretty worthless. But they are keeping the lights on so we will see how long they last.

I just bought 6 EG4 batteries and have a magnum inverter charger.

The power supply you linked can't reach the voltages needed to charge a 48V LFP battery. I just hooked mine up and charged them Signature (I think) recommends a discharge procedure to balance the packs. Mine aren't perfectly even but I gave up worrying about it. The lights stay on. I am not a...

I just bought 6 EG4 batteries and have a magnum inverter charger.

For a DIY pack you need something like that to top balance the cells. With the EG4 you don't have access to the cells to do a top balance. You just need to be able to set the charge parameters on the Magnum and your charge controller if you have solar. I have an older setup with Magnum inverters...

I just bought 6 EG4 batteries and have a magnum inverter charger.

I run some EG4 batteries as well as a DIY pack in parallel on my Magnum inverters. Just make sure you can set the parameters, if you can't buy the correct accessory to do so. No big deal.

Renogy DC DC Charger w/ MPPT

On the top, where I get some fin and some cover. Next time I give it a run I'll use a non-contact thermometer on it and get a number. I'll make sure to get the heat sink. But in any case, it just doesn't get hot.

Renogy DC DC Charger w/ MPPT

I can easily keep my hand on it for as long as I want without it being an endurance contest. That is after pulling 50 amps for a couple of hours.

Renogy DC DC Charger w/ MPPT

Mine doesn't. After pulling the max for a couple of hours it is warm but not hot.

Renogy DC DC Charger w/ MPPT

When I purchase a device I decide how much to de-rate depending on a number of factors. The history (or lack of) of the manufacturer, how mission critical the device is, cost, is there redundancy in the system, does the device get hot if I pull the max from it and so on. Some manufacturers with...

Renogy DC DC Charger w/ MPPT

Disagree that it means nothing and is all mental! This a time honored practice among conservative engineers called "de-rating". A fine practice and one I believe in myself. Electronics that run cooler last longer.

AC vs DC fridges for off-grid use

Just get the regular fridge. Remember that you only need to have batteries for the night time power consumption., During the day the solar will pay for it. So at night say 1/2 of your estimate. Just make sure the numbers all pencil out and you will be fine.

    Growatt or MPP 48V System

Yup. That and they run hot, have a high idle consumption, very little room to work with the wiring inside the case, not made to attach conduit to so we had to file the holes, the menus don't match up with the documentation, the up button scrolls down, the down button scrolls up, the lugs that...

    Growatt or MPP 48V System

My experience with the MPP solar 6048 has been terrible. I would never recommend them. I have no experience with the growatt. How mission critical is the inverter? If it is your only or main source of power, I would consider going with a tier 1 product. Don't be penny-wise, pound-foolish.

    Capacitor pre-charge

Still curious as to how it is actually wired.

    Capacitor pre-charge

Well, mine are rack mount. Not sure if there are different ones, at least mine came with rack mount hardware. I'd like to know how the built in pre-charge resistors work. DO they bypass the breaker or how exactly are they wired?
  31. boondox

    Capacitor pre-charge

Untrue, I think it depends on te size of the input capacitors. At least on my Magnum inverters with EG4's, I need a pre charge.

    MPP-Solar LVX-6048

Well, I didn't expect anything and didn't buy 'em. But if they can't parallel and charge from a generator they are worthless. If you can't expect that from them they shouldn't be on the market.
