Assuming you pay $0.12/KWh, can you ever come out ahead going full offgrid?

i case you missed the memo, power is the next way to controle the masses
This statement alone should wrap up this discussion thread!! My little island of semi-independence is more important than a few extra bucks in the bank.

To the OP's question..
When I was young things like ROI and 'cost effective' mattered. As I have grown older, cost effective matters less. The knowledge, skills and abilities acquired over the years, to this discussion involving electrical generation and storage, it's got two points of interest for me.
-One, it's paid for so theoretically it's mine.
-Two, I'm helping, teaching, my second and third generation family and friends to understand (somewhat) and be semi-responsible for something as important as the simple excitation and flow of electrons along copper wire. (Well, not so sure about the "flow" of electrons but I'm not a rocket scientist.)

I refuse to go to the grave thinking I will be clinching to that money bag of savings :ROFLMAO:

I agree, and I already have influenced my sister and her son and my own daughter and her husband. Several of my neighbors have asked about my solar. There were already two other EVs on our short block before we moved in with our two EVs a couple of years ago. It is a great feeling.

I vote, "it was worth it for me", but I am not totally off grid and do not plan to be.
The learning process, and chatting with all the good folks on the forum was just as much a factor as the PV system result.

and there we have it..
have no problem with it, nor the waste, just not in my backyard..

just for you i suggest we put it right outside your backyard fence ;)

The waste products from my preferred nuclear reactor do not include any elements heavier than iron. Therefore, it is safer than the ones you and Up North Moose enjoy in your back yards.

The heavier ions which sometimes fly into the Earth, and composition of the Earth itself, came from larger scale nuclear reactors.

so we pref the same nuclear reactor after all :)

Things do change. I used to buy gas for 35 cents. Surprisingly enough gas prices were darn cheap not too many years back after going through several shortages. Now it is high again.

Electrical rates are both a function of supply/demand and government regulation. California has high rates in large part due to its government. If I lived there I would expect it to get worse every passing year. The folks in charge there want Utopia and damn the cost.
The folks in charge may want a utopia, it seems we’re heading the opposite way to me.

CME take a bit longer. Good thing we see the light and electromagnetic waves first, have time to duck.

HAHAHAHAHHA well you guys got me on that one I have to admit!
'off grid' is Just Ideally speaking, and in my world not specific to electricity, yeah.
and the 'Good' has more than one meaning. lol

Largest importer of electricity in the country by far.
No surprise. I assumed we were ahead of a few others. Although as a percentage we are in the middle of the pack. Since that data was 2019, I am curious what the trend is? I tried to find more current data but no luck. I know my local Community Choice Aggregator, Sonoma Clean Power, just entered into a Power Purchase Agreement with a Solar Farm in Arizona and Nevada. That was a joint agreement with several other California CCAs. As a member of SCP I can pick a power mix and supposedly my power comes from a geothermal plant a hundred miles north of me. Of course I understand the electrons do not travel that far and during the day much of my power comes from my own solar and from 4PM to Midnight I peak shave by using my batteries. Today was a good solar day for me and I will be a net exporter but last month I was an net importer.

You're one step ahead of me brotha. I'm here, and I don't even have solar panels, battery, or an inverter yet. ?. I'm working on it, I swear!
